Orphanages

Orphanages throughout Latin America offer impoverished children and families food, clothing, shelter, education and most importantly hope.

Sustenance and hope is vital for a youngster to be able to dream. Our orphanages incorporate the resources to help children with the greatest need. Food For The Poor owns several orphanages in Latin America and the Caribbean and provides support to countless others through housing, food, education, and micro-enterprise programs.

Our Angels of Hope program consists 95 orphanages. This program maintains an enrollment of about 3,500 children and continues to grow each year. In addition, our Goods In Kind department provides resources and aid to hundreds of other orphanages and homes. These resources include: staple foods, cleaning products, personal hygiene items, paper products, clothing, shoes, furniture, fabric, sports equipment, toys, and school supplies. In addition to these resources, Food For The Poor provides services for building construction, renovations, equipment purchases, water or sanitation projects, well drilling, agricultural projects, animal husbandry projects, tilapia farming, soy factories, provision of school uniforms, and scholarship grants.

Another part of our education program for the homes and orphanages enrolled is computer stations for learning.  All of the homes must provide an education for the children they admit. For most children this is the first time that they will receive the opportunity for education. Often times children may be 11 or 12 years old before their first introduction to school.

Food For The Poor owns and manages five childrens homes.  These include the Boys and Girls homes in Haiti, their annexes for the Older Boys and Girls and the Childrens Handicapped Home.  The remaining homes we serve are independently run and receive support from Food For The Poor and our Angels of Hope program.

Why do the children come to the homes?  The reasons vary by country, as each country has a different structure that works through the Ministry of the Family (social services). The most common reason we encounter is that the parents are deceased or abandoned the children due to poverty-related causes.

Throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, thousands of children have been orphaned or abandoned. These precious children need a safe, loving environment in which they can grow and develop. Food For The Poor has specially selected orphanages to participate in our Angels Of Hope program. These orphanages are nongovernmental homes where the children can grow and develop mentally, physically and spiritually in a loving, Christian environment.

Food For The Poor donors have sponsored approximately 3,500 children in nine countries. We encourage our donors to correspond with sponsored children to encourage them and let them know that they are loved and valued. In addition to our Angels Of Hope program, more than 450 orphanages received aid from Food For The Poor in 2007.

Orphanages serve as a gateway to the future for many Latin American and Caribbean children. They instill hope, love, values and morals for these young people, providing the opportunity for a better life.
