Haiti – Fast Facts
Food For The Poor has 222 projects underway in Haiti and another 464 that have been completed since 1996. The organization has worked in the country since 1983. Key projects focus on different aspects of development:
- Through 2008, more than 8,000 single-unit houses have been built for the poor in Haiti with another 818 under construction. These simple homes provide the poor with shelter, safety and brighter futures.
- In addition to two Food For The Poor daily feeding programs, trailer-loads of food (such as rice, beans, flour, powdered milk and oil) are distributed to a variety of organizations throughout the country. Schools, orphanages and churches depend on these items to carry out feeding programs and for distribution to local families.
- Water is a critical need in Haiti. There are 35 water and sanitation projects under construction, and approximately 50 community development projects that include water and sanitation. Between 1998 and 2008, Food For The Poor completed 98 water-specific projects in Haiti. In addition, each of the 24 fishing villages has its own well. So far in 2009, 120 wells have been built. Each has a goal of supplying clean water through wells, filtration and other distribution systems.
- Food For The Poor works with five orphanages as part of the Angels of Hope program. Through this program, 261 children receive shelter and an education. Most importantly, they receive the loving care that most have been lacking previously.
- Because having an education can help break the chains of poverty, Food For The Poor provides schools with computers, furniture, textbooks, uniforms, and educational materials and supplies. The organization builds and repairs schools, and funds the operating expenses of several institutions.
- Self-sufficiency projects are vital to Haiti’s future. Fishing villages and aquaculture projects are providing residents with new food sources, and whole communities with a gainful source of income.
- There are 24 fishing villages in full operation in a variety of coastal locations, and nine villages are being planned for future development.
- Thirty-five tilapia ponds have been completed throughout the country. Another six tilapia ponds and seven pangasius ponds are under construction, with seven future sites being considered for aquaculture projects.
- More than 20 Food For The Poor projects in Haiti are geared toward production of other food products – chickens, goats, cows, fruit trees, and vegetable farms.
- By the end of 2008, Food For The Poor had distributed more than 125,000 fruit trees. In addition to helping small sustenance farmers, these projects help villages set up community farms where residents can enjoy harvests of peppers, corn, and other healthy vegetables.
- Animal husbandry projects provide individual families with their own animals to breed and consume -- predominantly goats, chickens and cows. In addition, farms are being established to raise strong, healthy animals to perpetuate the distribution process.
- Medical care is unaffordable for the masses in Haiti, and those living in rural areas suffer the most. In addition to operating a clinic at our warehouse compound in Port-au-Prince, Food For The Poor funds the operating expenses at other medical centers and builds facilities in areas that previously did not have access to healthcare.
Food For The Poor also serves Haiti through donations of goods. Shipments to Haiti include goods that serve basic needs as well as provide food, general healthcare items, and educational supplies.
