Honduras - Fast Facts
Food For The Poor has 30 projects underway or completed in Honduras. Key projects focus on different development aspects:
- Since 2007, 450 houses have been built for the poor in Honduras. These simple homes provide shelter, safety and a brighter future for the poor.
- There are eight tilapia, shrimp and pangasius projects in different regions of the country. All are meant to provide a source of food for the residents, as well as offer a self-sustaining source of income for the communities. The aquaculture projects were done in conjunction with the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund.
- Water is a critical need in Honduras. There are five water projects with the goal of supplying clean water through wells, filtration and other distribution systems.
- Five education projects are positioned with all ages covered – daycare to technical high schools to training projects for women.
- Food For The Poor works with 19 orphanages, as part of the Angels of Hope program.
- Several projects are geared toward production of other food products – chickens, goats, pigs and soy milk. These high-protein food sources are important in a population where malnutrition is a common threat.

Food For The Poor also serves Honduras through donations of goods. Goods In Kind shipments to Honduras over the last 18 months total $204 million in aid to the country. The goods serve basic needs as well as provide food, medicine, general healthcare items, and educational supplies.
After the recent earthquake, Food For The Poor contacted its partner organizations to see if there were any special needs and to let Hondurans know that the relief and development agency is standing by to offer any necessary assistance. In the meantime, containers of items outlined above, as well as ordinary food supplies such as rice and beans, will continue to be shipped as planned to the country and can be used wherever the need is determined to be the greatest.
