Nicaragua Facts

Nicaragua – Fast Facts

Food For The Poor has been working in Nicaragua since 1998, through several partners including the American Nicaraguan Foundation. The projects fall into 11 categories. Some of the priorities are:

Agricultural and animal husbandry projects that provide men, women and children with both immediate help and better futures.

  • The agricultural projects have the direct technical support of Taiwan ICDF. The Taiwanese, working with the people of Nicaragua, have converted arid soil into highly productive guava and papaya harvests. People without any prior agricultural skills are being taught not only how to prepare the land, and how to plant and harvest, but also how to do the marketing. These projects assist both men and women who now have new opportunities in these self- sustainable projects.
  • There are 13 animal husbandry projects either completed or underway. Goat, pig and chicken farms provide people with food to eat, and also provide a way to earn an income through selling or bartering products to others in the community.

In the last five years, Food For The Poor has built more than 8,000 housing units from coast to coast, including the area that was affected by Hurricane Felix in 2007.

Community development projects have been successful in Nicaragua. These projects include different components, such as housing, water, furniture, gardens, community centers, tools and medical clinics.

Food For The Poor works with 23 orphanages, as part of the Angels of Hope program. Through this program, 769 children receive shelter, and an education. Most importantly, they receive the loving care that most have been lacking previously.

There are 10 water projects in the country, including development of wells, restoration of water resources, and sanitation projects.

The Bethany Village Clinic and El Bijagual Medical Clinic offer much-needed medical care to the destitute.

Shipments to Nicaragua over the last 18 months have included aid to the needy in the form of food, medicine, general health care items, and educational supplies.
