Food For The Poor has been working in Nicaragua since 1997, with partners like the American
Nicaraguan Foundation. FFP projects in Nicaragua encompass agriculture, animal husbandry, water improvement, community
development, housing, and school construction projects.
- The agricultural projects have the direct technical support of the Taiwan International
Cooperation and Development Fund. The Taiwanese, working with the people of
Nicaragua, have converted arid soil into highly productive guava and papaya harvests.
People without any prior agricultural skills are being taught not only how to prepare the
land, and how to plant, irrigate and harvest, but also how to do the marketing. These
projects assist both men and women who now have new opportunities in these self-sustaining
projects.
- There are 17 animal husbandry projects either completed or underway. Goat, pig and
chicken farms provide people with food to eat, and also provide a way to earn an income
through selling or bartering products to others in the community.
- In 2010, Food For The Poor built more than 2,058 housing units from coast to coast, and more
than 400 units have gone up so far in 2011.
- Community development projects have been successful in Nicaragua. These projects include
different components, such as housing, water, furniture, gardens, community centers, tools and
medical clinics.
- Food For The Poor is helping with the care of 795 children currently in 22 Food For The Poor-supported
orphanages in the Angels Of Hope program.
- There are 50 water projects in the country, including development of wells, restoration of water
resources, and sanitation projects.
- The Bethany Village Clinic and El Bijagual Medical Clinic offer much-needed medical care to the
destitute.
- Shipments to Nicaragua over the last 18 months have included aid to the needy in the form of
food, medicine, health care items, and educational supplies. Food For The Poor has also
purchased some that food from local farmers and producers; such as: rice, papaya, mangoes and
vegetables.
