Child of the Month — Frequently Asked Questions

How is the child of the month selected?

The children selected are children that have been met by our Food For The Poor staff members. Some of the children are in orphanages, others live with their families. Some of the children are struggling to have just the basic necessities of life met while others are in need of an education or a home for their personal shelter.

Do you offer child sponsorship programs?

With Food For The Poor’s Angels Of Hope program, you can provide sponsorship to a child in need. Food For The Poor has specially selected orphanages in the Caribbean and Latin America for participation in our Angels Of Hope program. These are nongovernmental homes that help orphaned children grow and develop mentally, physically and spiritually in a Christian environment. For more information on the program, click here.

Will I be able to communicate with the child of the month?

No. The Child of the Month program is not a sponsorship program, but a program to benefit all of the children who are in need. The featured child of the month is the personal story of just one of our hundreds of children that need assistance with basic life needs.

How will I know the progress of the child of the month?

Each featured Child of the Month child will have their status updated regularly. These updates will be on the website and come in the monthly Child of the Month newsletter.

How can I become a Child of the Month Program Participant?

Becoming a participant is easy. Just sign up on the donation page and you will be enrolled to give a monthly gift. You can choose an amount that fits your monthly budget.

How much of what I donate actually benefits the children?

We take our responsibility as stewards of your gifts very seriously and work diligently to keep our costs to a minimum. In 2008, fundraising and other administrative costs comprised only 2.26% of our expenses — our lowest ratio ever. More than 97% of all donations received went directly to programs that help the poor.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

Yes. The IRS still allows a notable tax break for individuals considering a charitable gift: donors may deduct the full, fair market value of appreciated assets given to Food For The Poor, with no recognition of capital gains. That means that donors can leverage a large donation and charitable deduction using an asset with a small cost basis.
