Through Food For The Poor’s Child of the Month program we give children throughout the Caribbean and Latin America the means to live healthy and happy lives. Below are some of the children we’ve helped and we post updates on previous children as we can.

(September 2010) From birth, Eduardo’s young life has been filled with hunger. The toddler lives in a drought-plagued area of Guatemala, where crops struggle to grow and fields often lie fallow. Guatemala is suffering a national food crisis that has devastated families like Eduardo’s.

Adonay, Age — 14

(August 2010) Today, Adonay is a bright, energetic boy. He has been living in his current boys home for almost three years and is very happy here. He and the other boys in the home have a vegetable garden behind the house. This garden not only provides food for the home, but also enough surplus to sell to neighbors and even a local restaurant.

Christian, Age — 10

(July 2010) Christian was nearly tossed onto the streets when his family decided they no longer wanted to care for him. Today, at Christian’s orphanage in Honduras, he receives food, clothing, and most of all, compassion and the love he was denied.

Love

Love, Age — 9

(June 2010) After Haiti’s earthquake claimed the lives of both of her parents, 9-year-old Love’s first name has taken on even deeper significance.

In the wake of the January 12th disaster, a Good Samaritan found the little girl living alone in the streets of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The benevolent stranger then transported Love to an all-girls orphanage run by Food For The Poor miles away in northern Haiti.

David

David, Age — 2

(May 2010) David was born into a destitute family in poverty-stricken Guatemala. Severely malnourished, the boy was in critical condition. A local priest learned of the boy’s grave physical condition and brought him to a nutritional center supported by Food For The Poor.

David is just one example of the many miracles occurring at a Guatemalan nutritional center supported by Food For The Poor. After only eight months of care, David gained substantial weight and is even beginning to take his first steps.

Joel

Joel, Age — 11

(April 2010) At just four months of age Joel was brought to one of our supported orphanages in Trinidad. Joel’s mother could not properly care for him and Joel arrived severely neglected. As infants, Joel and his siblings were often left alone and laid out to sleep on discarded newspapers. 

Now 10 years old, Joel’s prayers to God continually include, “Bless me.  Please keep me safe.” Joel says that his new home is much safer than ’outside’.

Lester, Age — 11

(March 2010) Lester is a nine-year-old boy who was once abused and then abandoned by his parents. Taken into one of our boys homes, he can now be assured that there will be no abuse and no abandonment again.

Lester and other children that have experienced similar situations, need love and support to sustain their fragile lives.

Miriam, Age — 9

(February 2010) Miriam was found outside our orphanage doors when she was only four months old. At The Little Children of Jesus Home in Haiti, which cares for physically and mentally handicapped children, it’s common to find children like Miriam whose parents are unable or not willing to keep them.

Krisdelkis, Age — 6

(January 2010) "Take care of me...take care of me." That is all 6 year old Krisdelkis could say when she first arrived at the Food For The Poor orphanage. Coming from a severely neglected environment, the little girl could not understand anything but abuse. Today, her life is filled with friends, laughter and love...thanks to the Food For The Poor orphanage and generous donors like you.

Marbella, Age — 7

(December 2009) "She is a Miracle of God." This is how the nun who cares for 7-year-old Marbella recently described her newest patient. Marbella was brought to our supported home and clinic by her dying mother. The little girl is HIV-positive and has a mixture of meningitis and tuberculosis — normally a deadly combination.

Marbella arrived severely underweight, with bad flu symptoms and diarrhea. She hardly spoke. Half of the young girl’s body is paralyzed, and she is unable to raise her left hand. This innocent little girl had every reason to lose all hope.

Carlos, Age — 9

(November 2009) Just 6 years old when his mother died, Carlos ended up living on the street.  After spending several years living in cardboard boxes and begging for scraps of food, Carlos arrived at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. He now lives in a home for boys supported by Food For The Poor.

An eager student, Carlos hopes to become a pastor. “I want to be a good Christian,” Carlos said. “I like to go to church to sing and pray. I’d love to help people who are poor… who are sick.”
