Britney's Story

Child of The Month

In a poor section of Managua, Nicaragua, Britney Cordoba, 9, languished in severe pain after parasites nearly destroyed her intestines. Emergency surgery saved her life, but left the pretty girl with a colostomy bag and fears for her recovery. Britney, who was one of the best soccer players in her class, was wracked by pain and confined to bed. Join Our Children in Need Program

Like many destitute mothers, Britney’s mother Marling had to leave her three children with their grandparents to find work in another country. She worked as a maid in Costa Rica for a meager $40 a week.  Though she sent back almost every penny for the children, it wasn’t enough. For two years, Britney didn’t see her mother, because Marling couldn’t afford to come back and visit.

When Marling quit her job and returned to be at Britney’s side, her little girl begged Marling never to leave again. Along with her mother’s love, Britney relied on faith and trust in Christ to overcome her illness.  “I pray in the morning and at night.  I feel that Jesus is going to heal me,” Britney said.

Food For The Poor

Food For The Poor staff heard of Britney’s plight through our partner organization in Nicaragua and came to her aid with food for the family, along with other assistance.

Britney’s dearest wish was to receive her First Communion with her classmates. Britney wistfully told us, “I’d like to receive my First Communion, but my mother doesn’t have the money for a dress.  I want to feel pretty that day and have something to cherish my whole life.”

Upon hearing this, Food For The Poor staff sent Britney everything she needed for her First Communion. Britney, who recovered from her illness, was able to celebrate with her class. Afterward, she donated the dress to the church so another impoverished girl could also receive her First Communion. Today Britney is slowly, but steadily recovering. Gone is the colostomy bag and the little girl has high hopes of once more being able to play soccer with her classmates.
