Miriam's Story

Miriam was found outside our orphanage doors when she was only four months old. At The Little Children of Jesus Home in Haiti, which cares for physically and mentally handicapped children, it's common to find children like Miriam whose parents are unable or not willing to keep them. It's thought Miriam was abandoned because she was blind.

The children at this specialized orphanage are the children no one wants. They are blind or crippled and mentally or physically handicapped. Each and every child is treated with loving kindness. Director Gladys Nonez and her staff mother them in place of their absent parents. Gladys and her workers believe in the Psalm,

"Children too are a gift from the Lord." (Psalm 127:3a)

Because information such as birthdays is rarely available, everyone's birthday is celebrated on Valentine's Day. It's one of the special touches that make the orphanage a real home for the children."You have to do this job with your heart," says Gladys.

Gladys wishes Miriam's parents, and the parents of the other abandoned children, were able to care for their little ones, despite the challenges. Every child is a precious gift and cherished in God's eyes."I would like to teach them how to love them because they are their children," explains Gladys."You get a child like this and you can't just throw her out."

When she was found outside the walls of our orphanage for handicapped children in Haiti, Miriam was only four months old and thought to be blind. Today, this little girl’s life is filled with miracles, thanks to the Food For The Poor orphanage and generous friends like you.

The director of the orphanage, Gladys Nonez, had Miriam evaluated to assess if her sight could be restored. Miriam suffered from glaucoma and needed corneal surgery as well. She received operations on one eye. Now Miriam wears glasses and can see out of her one good eye. Future plans include surgery for the other eye as well, restoring her full vision.

Because she is doing so well, Miriam was transferred to our girl’s orphanage, Maison d’Amour. There, she attends school with the other girls, runs and plays like any other child, and does her homework. Miriam loves playing with dolls. In her pink-checked dress, her glasses perched on her tiny nose, Miriam runs about the home, examining everything new. She’s intensely curious and always studying everything around her new world.

Innocent children like Miriam need the love and support of people like you to sustain their fragile lives. Please consider becoming a member of Food For The Poor's Child of the Month Club by reaching out to help a child in desperate need.
