Hoops for HaitiA basketball tournament to raise money to support the poor in Haiti. Parents/church members sponsor children with a flat fee to play in the tournament. Sponsors pledge additional money for each point scored by the child they sponsor. On the day of the tournament, sell refreshments to raise additional funds. Have trophies/gifts for the winning team. This technique may be adapted to suit any sport your school/church is interested in. Pauper’s DinnerInvite everyone to dinner at the church/school hall charging $5.00. Fry onions and hamburger just for the aroma. Secretly prepare a rice and beans dinner (plain white rice with beans, no meat). Show Food for the Poor video, perform a skit about the life of a poor family, or have slide show depicting poverty. The emcee should discuss the issues of the poor. Then serve bowls of rice/beans. No drinks, only water. Explain to the people that a child in Haiti often only receives one bowl of rice and beans a day and that the purpose of this dinner is to raise money to support an FFP project.
