About Our Goods in Kind Department

Food For The Poor is the largest international aid and development organization based in the United States. We actively serve 17 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America, providing everything from emergency relief assistance to materials for long-term development projects.
The goal of the Goods in Kind Department is to acquire items requested from our beneficiaries in the various countries we serve. We work directly with churches and nongovermental organizations (NGOs) already established in the host country to determine what materials are needed to bring relief to the poor.
By having an efficient infrastructure and a network of partners in the countries we serve, we are able to effectively identify needs and send the appropriate goods.
Commonly requested items include food, medicines and medical supplies, school furniture and supplies, household items, disaster relief materials, seeds and building materials.
Here in the United States, we work closely with governmental, corporate and private benefactors to acquire the needed goods that will be delivered to poverty-stricken areas. In partnership with our donors, we are able to ship thousands of containers of goods each year.
We strive to be good stewards of the gifts we receive. More than 96% of all donations received go directly to programs that help the poor. Our efficiency has been recognized by several watchdog organizations, including the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance (scroll below to the left).
In 2008, Food For The Poor shipped more than 1 billion dollars in humanitarian aid to impoverished communities. All of this was made possible solely through the generosity of our donors.
