The baby would not stop crying. Dania Marisol cried because she was hungry, but there was no food to eat. High in the dusty, arid mountains of Honduras, Dania cries as her mother helplessly rocks her. Mirna de Jesus tries to comfort her wailing daughter, but there is little she can do.

It’s summertime, and food is scarce because of severe crop loss. Sometimes Mirna and her family only have a handful of green beans to eat. This desperately poor mother doesn’t have to admonish her children to eat their vegetables, because sometimes a small portion of beans is all they have.

Mirna is frightened for her children’s future and constantly worries about where the family’s next meal will come from. “It’s tough because sometimes I know I don’t have enough food. We don’t have enough, so we go without so the children eat first,” Mirna said.
