Help Ease a Child’s Hunger“I just watched them die.”
When asked who had lost a loved one to starvation, a chorus of women’s voices called out the names of the dead. Husbands, fathers, mothers, sisters… and children. In the remote mountains of Baie d’Orange, Haiti, most victims of starvation are children. These little ones slowly perish, their fragile immune systems too weak to fight for life. The red clay soil tells the story: That the absence of crops and very little livestock (most killed in the hurricanes of 2008) leaves barren fields devoid of sustainable resources. The sight of very few trees, mud and stick houses and naked children with bloated stomachs are scattered through the area. With nothing to eat and nothing to plant for future food, some of the children will not live to see tomorrow.
Each day, their tiny, helpless bodies grow a little weaker. Not having food takes a toll. The farmers desperately try to till the rocky earth, but they are having a difficult time. In many of the areas people have little or no work, with no means to earn an income. The rising food prices (up 40% in less than a year) since hurricanes ravaged the community in 2008 make it even more of a struggle for those with little money. Families here wander the countryside, looking for anything to eat, anything to fill their children’s rib-thin bodies. Food is especially deficient in Haiti, where 28% of children under the age of 5 die from malnutrition.
