Waiting in Hunger
Esther peers down into the empty cup her youngest son extends to her. Then she looks directly into his eyes.
“I cannot afford… I cannot afford,” she tearfully moans. And a tormented mother continues to feel like she is living a recurring nightmare. After her children’s father abandoned them, Esther cannot afford to buy daily food for her two sons — and she’s desperately looking for someone to help her. “I kneel and cry and pray… if someday God can send someone to help me,” Esther sobs. “Sometimes we have nothing... just water and go to sleep. I hope someday God will help me get out of this.” Occasionally Esther finds domestic cleaning work, but this is not enough to sustain her two boys. When we met her, the anxious mother expressed her frustrations about rising food costs and her urgent need of assistance. Esther’s tearfully reddened eyes are a stark reminder of the tortured souls across Latin America and the Caribbean who wait for any sign of relief. “I cannot afford milk,” Esther lamented. “It’s too expensive. The doctor said they [the children] need vitamins, but I cannot help.” “We pray every morning and every night,” Esther said while holding her boys’ hands. “I believe God doesn’t come himself… He sends people.” Through your support, you can be one of these instruments of God. Please, do what you can to help today. View more stories like Esther’s. “My tears have been my food day and night…” (Psalm 42:4a)
