Throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, poor families who cannot afford housing are forced to build their own shelter. The result is often a haphazardly pieced together shanty made of whatever discarded materials they can find. These “homes” quickly become death traps — with weather, mold, infectious diseases, vermin infestation and the constant threat of collapse just a few causes of daily anxiety.
