Hunger and heartache
The baby cries weakly. He’s lying on a bed in a tiny one-room shack with dirt floors. His skin is taut over clearly visible ribs — evidence of his fragile state.
Juan Gabriel’s mother died of pneumonia when he was just 3 months old, and his grandmother Luisa is struggling to provide for him and her eight other grandchildren in Nicaragua. The desperation in her voice is clear when she asks for help.
Juan’s cries continue, and his grandmother wrings her hands in despair. She gives him a bottle of soy milk, admitting that it’s no match for a mother’s love. But it’s the best she can do in her situation.
