A single cup of rice was all the family had to eat for the week
As Francesca Martinez held her hungry, crying baby, she stared listlessly at the rough wood walls of her shack. “I never dreamed it would be like this. I thought we’d have work,” she said. “Every night I’m praying on my knees so I can get strength to face the unknown, not knowing if the children will eat.”
There is no work, just hunger and suffering in the area of Honduras where Francesca, her husband and their two little ones live. Every day Juan, 26, leaves the house at 5 a.m. to search for any work to bring home food. Francesca washes clothing for others in exchange for a little rice, but her neighbors are also poor and have little to share. Sick with worry about them dying from starvation, she can only helplessly watch her children cry. Francesca’s bone-thin body is too malnourished to breast-feed one-year-old Juan. Hunger is an “emptiness,” says Francesca. “If I feel this way, I can only imagine how my children feel because they haven’t eaten either.” From Honduras to Guatemala to Haiti, rice is a lifesaving staple in the countries Food For The Poor serves. When you give a bag of rice to just one hungry family like Francesca’s, you help save precious lives. Your gift will provide desperately needed rice for the hungry. Please, give your most generous gift today. “Lift up your hands to Him for the lives of your children,
who faint from hunger at every street corner.” (Lamentations 2:19b, niv)
