Hormel Foods, a multinational manufacturer and marketer of consumer-branded food and meat products, began the effort in Guatemala 18 months ago and recently signed an agreement with Food For The Poor to continue supplying product for at least another three years.

Food For The Poor, the largest international relief organization in the United States, works in 17 countries, one of which is Guatemala.

Hormel was moved to respond when we learned these facts about that country:

  • Guatemala has the highest rate of chronic malnutrition in our hemisphere.
  • Nearly half of all children under 5 are stunted, the highest rate in the world.
  • The rate of chronic child malnutrition in Guatemala is higher than many countries in Africa.
  • More than 75 percent of the people live in poverty.
Spammy, Hormel and On Our Way to Ending Hunger logos

Hormel Foods is a longtime leader in shelf-stable protein and recognized an opportunity to provide support for developing countries that often lack clean water and protein in individuals’ diets. To help alleviate hunger and malnutrition, we leveraged our core competencies to create a Spammy™, a shelf-stable turkey spread that has been fortified with zinc, iron, B vitamins, and other essential vitamins and minerals. This innovative new product builds on the long-term commitment from Hormel Foods to address hunger domestically and internationally under the banner of “On Our Way to Ending Hunger.”

We have been working with Food For The Poor and Caritas, a relief organization in Guatemala, to distribute Spammy™ through orphanages and family centers in the country. At the family centers, the mothers not only receive protein to feed their children, they receive education in the importance of nutrition and how to ensure good health for their children. Because some malnutrition problems start even before a baby is born, mothers-to-be also are given the high-protein product to begin preparing for a healthy baby.

Results have been excellent, and we have seen improved energy levels and cognitive skills among the children who have consumed it regularly.

We ask your help in transforming the lives of these children through the simple addition of good quality protein in their diets.

All funds donated through this Hormel Foods/Food For The Poor champions page will go directly and fully to Food For The Poor to purchase Spammy™, at cost, from Hormel Foods. Spammy™ then will be sent to children in Guatemala to address malnutrition.

Together, we can all make a difference.
