Guyana is a small country (about the size of Idaho) located in northern South America. The World Bank has rated Guyana as one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.
About one-third of the Guyanese population lives below the poverty line, with indigenous people being disproportionately affected.
Urban slums and rural farming communities suffer from inadequate healthcare and poor educational facilities. The rural poor are often completely cut off from any sort of population center or modern services. Among the urban poor, families are often forced to live in hazardous conditions in makeshift shacks.
Food For The Poor has been working in Guyana since June of 1991, delivering food and other basic items to the country’s poor. Food For The Poor is now the leading organization providing relief and sustainable development projects throughout Guyana.
