Lutheran Bishops’ Guatemalan Mission

Embarking on Guatemalan Mission

On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, I embarked on a mission with Six District Presidents of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) and one Chairman of the Board of Directors of LCMS who served as Admiral of the U.S. Navy. Two pastors, who also belong to LCMS, were an important part of our pilgrimage. These pastors work diligently for Food For The Poor as speakers in our Speakers’ Bureau — frequently visiting churches and preaching the “Good News” of the Gospel to congregations, as well as sharing the needs of the poorest of God’s poor and begging on their behalf. Participants in what was a truly amazing mission were:

Esteemed Lutheran Bishops:

Rev. Dr. John G. Brunner

Eastern District

Rev. Dr. Gerhard Michael

Florida-Georgia

Rev. William Klettke

New Jersey

Rev. Dr. Roy Maack

Southeastern

Rev. James Keuralainen

New England

Rev. Dan May

Indiana

Rev. Don Muchow

Chairman, LCMS Board of Directors

Food For The Poor Lutheran Speakers:

Rev. David Mueller

Pilgrimage Spiritual Director

Rev. Walter D. Volz

Lutheran Bishops Pilgrimage Coordinator

Food For The Poor Staff:

Angel A. Aloma

Executive Director

Victor Morales

Projects Manager — Guatemala & Nicaragua

At first I had some trepidation about going on a mission and spending several days with such a distinguished group of men of God. I have to say that I was completely at ease from the very first couple of hours after meeting these very special gentlemen. They were men of tremendous humility and wonderfully nice people. Their sense of compassion, as I learned throughout the pilgrimage, was matched by their depth and theological knowledge. They also had a really great sense of humor!
