4/8/08 Food shortage critical in Haiti

-URGENT APPEAL- - MEDIA ALERT-

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (April 8, 2008) - Food For The Poor, one of the largest relief and development

agencies working in Haiti, is calling for donations to increase food shipments to Haiti in order to alleviate the violent situation created by rising food prices and widespread poverty.

News reports from Haiti say demonstrations and protests against the soaring food prices have been taking place throughout Haiti. The cost of staples like rice, beans, and flour has risen 50% in Haiti over the past year.

“It’s reached a critical stage in Haiti and we are asking everyone who can help to please do so,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor in Coconut Creek, Florida.  “Here in the U.S., we’re concerned that gasoline is over $3.00 a gallon,” said Aloma.  “In Haiti, thousands of people who were already struggling to feed their children on less than $2.00 a day are finding the new higher prices of food a life-threatening challenge. We need to do everything we can to help.”

Food For The Poor is asking people to go to its Website to donate in order to help end the hunger –and the violence –in Haiti.

“We have the logistics in place to make sure that assistance gets to Haiti quickly and into the right hands,” said Aloma. “Every shipment of food we send will save lives.”

Through its feeding center and warehouses in Haiti, Food For The Poor feeds more than 20,000 destitute Haitians every day.  Food For The Poor also regularly supplies food to thousands of schools, orphanages, churches, hospitals and other groups on the island.
