Hibernia Basic School Construction

Hibernia District, Devon P.O., Jamaica
Lynn University and their donors

Project Description and Objectives

The Hibernia Basic School Construction Project provides for a sturdy wooden schoolhouse using four Food For The Poor housing units. In addition to a dedicated building, construction also includes proper sanitation facilities and adequate amenities and equipment for meal preparation. The small kitchen is built and furnished with a refrigerator and four-burner stove with oven in order to provide a hot meal to the children. New sanitation facilities will ensure that the students have a healthy and clean environment in which to learn. The budget also provides for the provision of school furnishings and signage. Total cost of the project is $27,186.70.

Progress Update

The Hibernia District now has a sturdy school building that will provide a safe learning environment for the students who attend. The name of the school is Hibernia Early Childhood Institute.

All the necessary plumbing connections have been made in order for the facility to function accordingly. The school also has an office/sick bay area. The area is furnished with a desk and chair for the teacher and a bed for a sick child. The classroom is also furnished with tables and chairs for the students.

The principal, Mrs. Ennis, is very enthusiastic about the new school. Mrs. Ennis stated, “This building is a dream come true. We have never had our own space and this is going to make the school a whole lot better. The children will be able to have their own classroom and concentrate on their work.”

Members of the community and parents are also excited about the establishment of this new school, “This is the right place for the students to be!” “It is a beautiful building, the children are going to be so happy inside.”

Cap-Haitien Water Well
Derac, Cap-Haitien, Haiti

Thank you for joining Food For The Poor’s humanitarian mission of providing life-sustaining essentials to the poorest of poor throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Because of your commitment, Food For The Poor is able to bring pure and plentiful water to areas plagued by infected and inadequate water resources. Your generous support has installed an artesian water well in Derac, a community in Cap Haitien, where it is benefiting approximately 2,000 needy residents. Total cost of the project is $5,298.

Cap-Haitien water well

Derac is located in the northeast part of Haiti, approximately one hour away from Cap-Haitian. The community has a population of 25,000 people. The majority of the population is poor. Families struggle to find food. The only food source that is readily available is mangos. Because of the lack of food, malnutrition is prevalent. It is normal to see the affects of malnutrition in children — large bellies and orange color hair. The living conditions are miserable. The houses are made out of clay, mud, and old galvanized sheet metal. They are fragile and unsafe for the families to live in. Food For the Poor recently installed a well in the community, which provide residents with potable water. The people of the community are uneducated. Most of the families cannot afford to send their children to school.

Thank you, Lynn University Students for the Poor, for your loving gift. The residents of Derac are now enjoying the benefits of easily accessible, clean water.

The community of Derac is extremely grateful for your gift of abundant, potable water.
