Events and Facilities Coordinator, Lynn University, Florida

“Student groups on the Lynn campus host a vast majority of events that take place each year. These groups all have a different impact on our campus as a whole. This year I began to notice a great amount of activity by the students involved with Students for the Poor (SFP). They were extremely excited and driven to get their message of the great need to help the poor not only in our country but throughout the world.

During their weeklong “camp out” in the middle of campus, they gave the school a chance to see a typical house the organization would build for a family. I think people really began to understand how serious Students for the Poor is and how they want to make an impact here at Lynn. After taking a look at the house, I stopped by their information table in the student center lobby where Dan Hennessey, the campus chapter president, was handing out information. He was so eager to talk to me and let me know how important their cause was and how he wanted the group to grow. He had vast amounts of information and, by talking with him and another student involved, it impressed upon me the importance of their cause.

After speaking with the students, I wanted to get involved in anyway that I could. SFP’s final event of the year was collecting donated clothing with the goal to fill in entire dorm room. I stopped by on the day they were sorting and boxing to help. I found a room filled with students and staff diligently working to make the goal happen. They filled the entire dorm room with over 80 huge boxes of clothing and delivered the boxes to the local Food for the Poor office. Just seeing young people with a passion to help others makes you know there is real hope in the world. The leaders of SFP are doing great things on our campus and it has been so enjoyable to see so many people getting involved in a cause greater than themselves.”
