“I participated in the “Journey of Hope” with three faculty and 25 amazing young adults. Four months prior to the trip, I experienced a tremendous personal loss (the passing of my wife from cancer) and was not sure if I should go. However, I realized the best way to honor my spiritual calling and the memory of my wife was to serve others in as much need of hope and compassion as me. As a teacher I have always found myself working for and with children and adults considered less fortunate or capable. The “Journey of Hope” trip to Jamaica affirmed my faith in service as I received far more blessings during the week then I gave. I found young students filled with compassion and understanding working with each other to make a difference in the life of a child, adult, or teenager even if it was for a short time. I watched young men and women cry because of what they witnessed. I heard laughter and joy that filled my heart and demonstrated what a warm touch can do for a person longing to be cared about and loved. What will remain in my heart and soul for the rest of my days are the joy, laughter and love that was shared on this trip which filled a huge void in my own life and provided me with a gift of HOPE not just personally but for how we embrace God’s message of service in our life each day. I was blessed and privileged to work with 25 wonderful students and three incredible colleagues for a week. We will forever be friends that shared a very special time together in service to others. Service is a blessing and a natural part of our very being.”
